Since twenty-one, I’ve associated the Fourth of July weekend with Jim’s death. The term “Independence Day” took on new weight. Although the news took several days to filter through, acceptance took much longer. Finally, I wrote a short letter asking if it was “really true.” I recently found the note I got back.
